"If ever there were a spring day so perfect, so uplifted by a warm intermittent breeze
that it made you want to throw open all the windows in the house,
and unlatch the door to the canary's cage, indeed, rip the little door from its jamb,
a day when the cool brick paths and the garden bursting with peonies,
seemed so etched in sunlight that you felt like taking a hammer to the glass paperweight
on the living room end table,
releasing the inhabitants from their snow-covered cottage
so they could walk out, holding hands and squinting
into this larger dome of blue and white,
well, today is just that kind of day."
Today - Billy Collins
I'm really feeling those first two sentences (the whole poem to be honest!) as today is the Spring Equinox, evoking those joyous feelings of change and growth.
I love adapting with the seasons and finding the joy in each one - It's definitely easy to find in Spring.
As we move out of hibernation and into the season of birth and re growth, it’s a beautiful time to connect with our senses. Our eyes upon the cherry blossom, blue skies and yellow daffodils. Our noses to the scent of freshly cut grass. Our ears to the sweet sound of birdsong on those lighter mornings after months of darkness. Our touch whilst planting spring flowers into our flowerbeds and breathing life into nature.
This is the perfect time to welcome in the softness and the senses, and what better way than to implement slow living activities into your lifestyle this Spring.
So if you've been thinking about ways you can open yourself up to Spring and slow living, keep reading and feel inspired as we enter a new season.
Spring Interiors
I personally love decorating my home as we move with the seasons. It really allows me to feel deeper into seasonal living and welcome each one indoors as well as experiencing them outdoors.
Here are a few ways that I personally like to change up my interiors to introduce Spring into my home:
Replace my Winter wall prints with Spring Prints
Buy Fresh seasonal flowers for the breakfast bar (of course daffodils and tulips are a beautiful choice for Spring - I also love Pink roses - there’s something about Pink that makes me think about Spring!)
Update my faux flower vase decorations with blossom
Pour some Zoflora Springtime fragrant disinfectant into my Kitchen surface spray so when I clean the Kitchen it gives a gorgeous Spring Aroma
Create New Spring Traditions
If you have a look locally, I’m sure you’ll find there is lot’s going on that you can get involved in as well as creating your own experiences.
What's beautiful about this is that by trying different things, you can find what brings you the most joy and instil new traditions for Spring each year for you and your family to enjoy.
It’s always lovely to try new things and when you can do this in line with the seasons, it helps you connect to them even more.
Here's some inspiration for you:
A Spring Wreath Making Workshop
Spring Yoga Workshops
Candle Making Experience (of course choosing springtime scents will help this feel more aligned with the season. This would also be a lovely idea for you then to introduce this same scented candle into your home each spring to evoke feelings of nostalgia)
A trip to the garden centre to buy seasonal flowers and then planting them once your home. This could be a lovely way to get your children involved too
A Spring Picnic (last year me and my husband loved spending an afternoon at the park or finding a spot at a national trust and setting up on a blanket for a couple of hours)
Blossom Tree drawing or painting - This could be done on your own, with a friend or partner and children. Find your favourite blossom tree and connect to nature
Spring Clean
Although it never sounds fun, once it’s done you can’t deny that lovely feeling of a clean and decluttered space.
Choose one room, put on a feel good playlist and let the spring cleaning commence.
If tackling a whole room feels too overwhelming then start off by just choosing 1 cupboard or 1 area to focus on.
This will help you reconnect with your space and create a calmer environment at home.
Journal To Honour The Seasons
Simply spend some time writing down things from Winter that you are grateful for and the things you are looking forward to this Spring.
This was a new little activity for me this year but I really enjoyed connecting to pen and paper and the seasons. It only took me about 10 minutes but it was beautiful to reflect on Winter, thinking of all the things I enjoyed about the season, the slower pace and beautiful winter skies.
After honouring Winter I then turned my attention to Spring - Leaning into that excited energy of all the things I'm looking forward to in this new season that awaits us.
Visit A New Tearoom & Order Your Favourites
Although it's nice to go back to your favourite places, I do love having a drive out and discovering new places (although there may be places on your doorstep that you haven't management to pay a visit too).
I took my mom out for Lunch on Friday for a Mother's Day Treat and we went to a lovely place in Kinver (Staffordshire) called 'The Olde House Tearooms'. It was such a sweet place with lovely food and thankfully the sunshine came out for us as we sat in the conservatory drinking our coffees and digging into our lunch.
I'm also loving the seasonal food on offer at the moment in cafe's too (of course I mean all the easter themed cakes!).
So this Spring, think about if there is anywhere on your list of places that you've been meaning to visit and schedule in a coffee date or a lunch date.
So as we welcome a new season, I hope I’ve helped inspire you to connect to slow and seasonal living.
Try new things this Spring that your soul has been desiring, open your senses to the growth around you and welcome that exciting energy of change.
